Scanning is the use of electronic hardware and software to interpret the wavelength and intensity of light coming from reflective or transparent copy and convert it into digital information. At RR Donnelley, there are multiple scanning processes available, each with a unique set of capabilities for their specialized functions.

  • Conventional Scanning handles the digitization of continuous-tone images, resulting in separations for reproduction. The output can be black and white halftone files, four-color halftone files, spot color halftone files, or files for manipulating reproductions electronically. Line-work reproduction files can also be created on the appropriately equipped scanner. Generally, scanned files tend to be quite large. The resolution, type of scan, and physical size required for use all contribute to the final size of the file.
  • Copydot Scanning produces an electronic file of previously generated positive or negative film (or previously printed color-separated reflective copy). This scan is highly literal, distinguishing only between image and non-image areas. Copydot scanning creates files much larger than those of conventional scans, with the resolution extremely high in order to precisely reproduce the spots and lines of the original copy. Copydot scanning is today’s most accurate method of converting existing film to an electronic file.
